Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic may be disciplined for violent conduct following Wednesday night's dramatic match victory over Everton. In the aftermath of Gareth Barry's dismissal, the Serbian had James McCarthy in a headlock and appeared to attempt a headbutt in the midfielder's direction.
The Everton boss, Roberto Martinez during a post match interview stated:
“If you look at the images Ivanovic’s behaviour is wrong. He grabs him around the neck
in a forceful manner then puts his head against him when James McCarthy didn’t react
and if you want to be on top of the laws, that’s a red card"
.
Post-match images also led many to question whether Ivanovic had “Suarezed” the Everton midfielder as photos seem to show the Serbian appearing to dig in with his teeth. Moments later, Willian struck a last-gasp winner to hand Chelsea all three points, with Ivanovic involved in the build-up, leaving Toffees boss Roberto Martinez furious that he was still on the pitch.
FA disciplinary chiefs are almost certain to investigate the affray on Thursday morning said "one of the EPL official".
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho checked out of a BBC interview when asked about the Ivanovic incident and when questioned by BT Sport, he said:
"Don’t make me laugh, don’t make me laugh. I’m concerned with my reaction because
one more question (about this) and I will leave. They made lots of fouls, what you would
call intelligent fouls, but if the referee follows the rule it’s yellow card after yellow card
and then inevitably you get a red card — which they eventually did.’
